ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Is drinking when you are NOT driving a car dangerous?

  • Alcohol use is involved in about 25% to 50% of adolescent and adult deaths associated with water recreation.
  • Among young males, alcohol is a major factor in 50% of drownings.
  • Twenty-eight percent of the suicides by children ages 9 to 15 could be attributed to alcohol.
  • Adolescents who drink heavily assume the same long-term health risks as adults who drink heavily.
  • Twelve- to sixteen-year-old girls who are current drinkers are four times more likely than their non-drinking peers to suffer depression.
  • Adolescent females who drink exhibit higher levels of estradiol (an estrogen) and testosterone than non-drinking girls. High levels of estrogen may contribute to increased risk for specific diseases, including breast cancer; high levels of testosterone are associated with an increased risk of substance use.
